Sound Card Troubleshooting

-The sound card can have an assortment of problems. It's outside the scope of this page to address all of them. Most of the time using windows troubleshooter should help find the problem. If there are conflicts with the system look in the systems folder in the control panel for more information.

-One thing that a sound card is prone to is EMF. The electromagnetic signals from other components in the system itself can cause problems. The best way to cure this is move the sound card as far away from other components as possible.

-Another note about sound cards (sound blaster compatible) is they need three things to run correctly.

  • IRQ (interrupt Request)
  • Direct Memory Access (DMA)
  • Memory Address

-If any one of these especially the IRQ are conflicted with on another device you will have problems.

-The most common is an IRQ conflict. You may need to change the IRQ of the sound card. Or even change BUS types if all else fails. A overloaded system can cut down on available resources on a system very quickly.
