Switching slave HD (with Data) to another computer as slave there to transfer files

I want to transfer a slave caviar 2540 HD (540MB) from one computer to another without damaging files. Do I need to repartition the drive first? I hooked it all up and got the bios to auto detect, but all the files were read as one "corel media" file of 500MB??? The drive was coompressed before I took it out so that I could get more files onto it.
