Something similar happened to my AMD K-6 PC last night. I booted up the PC, dialed in to Mindspring (Earthlink) and opened my E-mail. I got up to go to the refrigerator and heard a loud "pop." The monitor screen was blank and I immediately hit the "off" switch on the surge protector. My first thought was that the monitor had gone bad -- I'd never heard of a PC making a popping sound. So I disconnected the monitor and tried restarting the PC to see if it would boot up, and I learned that the PC was the source of the "pop." I immediately hit the "off" switch on the surge protector again. The power supply appears to be the source of the "pop." I guess that the power supply and the monitor are the only two components in a PC that could go "pop." Unless someone offers a different diagnosis, I'm going to get a new power supply. I just hope it didn't fry the motherboard.
