Installing a CPU fan

My old CPU fan is starting to break so I bought a new. However, in my old one there was only two wires, red and blk, +12V and 0V. In new one there is a third, yellow one. It has a marking "12V" but any connection seems to work with it as I have tried with same coloured wires of the power source. It jerks but stops immediately. In the motherboard I havenīt neither found a connector for this kind of cooler. Is it about some rotating speed monitoring or what? How to solve this?
